The John N. Hnatuik Rural Medical Student Bursary

This bursary offers full tuition to rural medical students for each year of medical studies.  It is available to students in any year of their medical degree.  Once accepted, and based on meeting the program requirements, the student receives the bursary annually until graduation from medical school.

This bursary offers full tuition to rural medical students for each year of medical studies.  It is available to students in any year of their medical degree.  Once accepted, and based on meeting the program requirements, the student receives the bursary annually until graduation from medical school.

There is a 3-year return of service agreement with RPAP, which is pro-rated to the number of years the bursary is awarded to the recipient. 

Applicants need to:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada living in Alberta
  • Be enrolled as a full-time medical student at University of Alberta or University of Calgary
  • Have resided in a Canadian rural community¹ at least 5 of 7 consecutive years immediately prior to entering a university program.
  • Be a member of a Rural Medical Interest Group at the Alberta university where taking the medical degree

Applicants will also be assessed based on:

  • Community volunteerism
  • Ties to a rural community
  • Recognition of rural physicians in their community

Submission deadline:

Applications will be accepted by fax, mail or email and can be submitted any time prior to November 1st of each year.  There will be one round of award granting, with up to 10 awards of this bursary, per year.
